The new Apple TV app is here a step towards a Netflix rival

Today Apple released the redesigned version of the Apple TV app. Apple has unveiled big changes to its TV app, rolling out visual improvements and setting things up to integrate the hotly anticipated Apple TV Plus streaming service later this year.

The app is now live on Apple TV devices, iPads, iPhones and iPods assuming you’ve updated.

Notably, the update includes Apple’s subscription-based Channels feature, which is the first big step toward making the Apple TV app more appealing in preparation for the launch of Apple TV+.

The new app takes some heavy inspiration from Apple Music, and seemingly for the better. There’s now an “Up Next” section, for instance, which lets view content that’s synced across all your devices, and the app also now offers recommendations based on your viewing history. You’ll also find a new, curated section for content aimed at kids, but it’ll send you to third-party apps rather than offering it through the new Channels.

The initial offerings include HBO, Starz, Showtime, Smithsonian Channel, EPIX, and Tastemade, with more to come like CBS All-Access and MTV Hits. You can watch all the content on demand and ad-free, plus download shows to watch offline which is a first for HBO. Also, with Family Sharing, up to six family members can share channel subscription

If you already subscribe to one of these third-party channels and would like to opt into their integration with Apple TV channels, you’ll have to end your subscriptions and re-subscribe through the app.
