Apple updates tvOS with Home support and picture-in-picture

Apple has announced a variety of new features for its tvOS platform, adding better support for Apple’s HomeKit accessories, a new picture-in-picture mode, and Microsoft’s Elite 2 and Adaptive Xbox One controllers.

tvOS will also allow for direct control of HomeKit accessories through a new Control Center UI, which looks similar to the menu found on iOS and iPadOS. As part of that new UI, Apple is also offering multiuser support for the Apple TV, although the company has only said that it’ll be used for resuming gameplay on Apple Arcade games for now.

There are smaller updates, too, like better audio sharing with AirPod earbuds and support for up to 4K video streaming from the Photos app on iOS devices.

On the gaming side, Apple is expanding multi-user support. You’ll open the control center to switch between users and see your progress, achievements and friends. You can instantly resume games where you left off, and Apple is adding support for Xbox Elite and Xbox Adaptive Controllers.

tvOS 14 is also adding picture-in-picture mode. That will bring benefits like the ability to continue your workouts while watching the news or the big game. And AirPlay is getting better, so the whole family can share videos on the Apple TV and take advantage of the picture-in-picture when they do.
