Samsung announces the Galaxy Z Fold 2 with bigger screens and better cameras

Samsung has shown off the second-generation of its full-size folding smartphone, the elegantly-named Galaxy Z Fold 2. The handset has already been widely leaked before its appearance here, and the changes to the original are pretty noticeable. Up front, the phone’s secondary display now covers the whole top cover of the devices, compared to the stubby version found in the previous edition.

The new Galaxy Z Fold 2 renamed to match the Galaxy Z Flip and Z Flip 5G released earlier this year marks Samsung’s first major refresh for its flagship foldable phone and looks to improve on nearly every shortcoming of the original model.

The Z Fold 2 has a full-size 6.2-inch screen that covers the entire front of the phone, making it far more usable without having to unfold the larger display. The main display is also bigger, at 7.6-inches. And the weird, notched corner that marred the top right corner of the flexible interior panel is gone, too, replaced by a less obtrusive hole-punch camera that takes up far less space on the folding OLED screen.

In terms of colors, the Fold 2 is available in both black and bronze, while fancier-pantsier buyers can opt for a Thom Browne-edition. A 5G version is currently available to reserve on Samsung’s website, but there’s no extra information about what’s inside, or the price. Samsung says that we’ll learn more about the Fold2 at its own, dedicated launch at some point in September.
