LG has reportedly stopped making smartphones

LG has taken an important step toward shutting down its mobile business. The last LG phones have rolled off the production line and the company will no longer manufacture handsets after Monday, according to Asia Business Daily.

The company announced plans in early April to wind down its phone business, but it kept making handsets for a couple more months to fulfill contracts with telecom companies. A factory in Vietnam where LG built many of its smartphones will be converted into a household appliance manufacturing plant, Asia Business Daily reports.

The end of production for LG smartphones doesn’t really come as a surprise. LG previously said that it would fulfill its last contracts with carriers and other entities, something that’s clearly been done now that production is coming to a close. What’s next for the assembly lines and facilities used to produce LG smartphones? The Vietnam-based factory will apparently move to producing home appliances.

The factory in Vietnam, which used to be the backbone of smartphone production, will switch to a household appliance production line. Previously, LG Electronics decided to expand its home appliance production line at its Vietnam factory, the largest smartphone production base, and ensure the succession of employment of local smartphone factory personnel.

LG will fully depart the smartphone market on July 31, according to its previous schedule, though the company has committed to providing three years of Android updates to smartphones already released.
