Amazon announces Fetch pet tracker that uses new Sidewalk networking

The Amazon Fetch, announced at the Amazon hardware event today, will help you keep track of your dog. It’s a simple tracker that goes onto your dog’s collar. Then, you’ll be able to set up a geofence area around your garden and get an alert when it leaves.

Fetch uses Amazon’s new Sidewalk networking standard. Sidewalk uses 900MHz spectrum, and Amazon says it works over distances up to 500m and even as far as a mile using a network of access points. Amazon says it handed out 700 of the devices to its employees, friends, and family and had the LA Basin completely covered by the network in three weeks.

The company didn’t announce a price or release date for Amazon Fetch yet, but did hint that the company is aiming for next year. Pet trackers that use signals like Bluetooth are already pretty common, but the idea of using this with a new signal from Amazon to greatly extend the range is intriguing.
