YouTube Music’s transfer tool is finally rolling out

Google announced the feature about a month ago, but it took a while to become fully available.

Google is killing Google Play Music at the end of the year, and its YouTube music transfer tool means users will not be left out, at least in theory, when they launch the new feature. The device was first announced in May, but is now being made widely available.

YouTube Play is finally ready to take over from Google Play Music. The service has received several updates in the last one year, including a new Explore tab, like Now playing screen with lyrics support etc. Sure, Spotify and Apple Music are better, but not so much better than the value proposition of YouTube Music and YouTube Premium, and that’s betting on Google’s potential.

How to transfer your Google Play Music library to YouTube Music

Open the YouTube Music app on your phone.
Tap the Let’s Go button under the Play Music banner.
Tap Start Transfer.

The entire transfer could take a few hours to complete depending on how much history you have with Google Play Music, so feel free to leave the YouTube Music app at any time and the transfer will continue in the background.

Once the transfer is finished (an email will be sent to you when this happens), you’ll see a new collection of songs on your YouTube Music home page that are all recommended from your Play Music library. Also, if you had any stations that you liked to listen to in Play Music, you’ll now find these in the Playlists section of the YouTube Music app.

The entire process is rather seamless and doesn’t require much work on your part. Just tap a few buttons.
