Check Your Emails

Sorry I have not posted much recently I have changed job and been very busy

So it’s 0645 and I’m sat at my desk right now and I’ve turned on my outlook. A pile of emails from yesterday flood the inbox. Filtering through the spammy offers of multi million business opportunities and daily reports I noticed an email received at 2045!!

This sparked a discussion with my work mates who are also in at this hour about emailing etc out of hours. So in my opinion as soon as I leave work that’s me finished for the day. Everyone else insist that they have to check emails etc.

Don’t get me wrong I am definitely 100% committed to my duties and responsibilities.

In my opinion this means you’re never really finished work. You’re not switching off and chilling out. It means you’re taking the stresses and hassles of a work day home with you. And for what?? Does it mean you have less work to do the next day? Probably not. Will it get you recognition from your peers at work? Probably not. Will you be getting paid for it? Probably not.

Nowadays whilst I’m chained to a desk I don’t feel the need to be working 24/7. I enjoy my time off work and freedom more.

So why do people do it?

When I was a student (over 15 years ago) there was a study done that showed people were working less hours and spending more time doing leisure or sports activities. It would be interesting to see the results of the same study today. If answered honestly I am sure the statistics will have started to go the other direction.

Technology is definitely to blame for this probable rising statistic. People have work emails pushed onto smart phones, text messaging is a very cheap and effective means of communications and applications like FaceTime and Skype mean you can always attend a meeting.

Here’s my suggestion to everyone. When you finish work tonight, go home put the phone away and take a night off. Your stress levels will thank you for it.

After all surely we ‘work to live’ not ‘live to work’
